August on the farm

August on the farm

By Karina Scriven
25, July 2018

August, the peak of the summer. Long hazy days with Mother Nature's melodies drifting on the warm breeze. This summer has been pretty different to what we are used to. With the longest lasting blast of heat since the 70's. We may not have had as much rain as we would have hoped for but the occasional downpour has filled up the troughs and streams soaking into the land. Our Red Rubies are designed to eat rough grasses, their ancestral home is the ragged moorland of Exmoor, so a little brown, crunchy grass is no big deal in comparison to wild unrelenting bracken. We have total faith in Mother Nature.

August is the perfect time of the year to spend as much time outside as possible. enjoying the fruits of the summer veggie patch with crunchy sides and a rainbow of colours on our plate. We love eating al fresco with friends and loved ones, lighting up the firepits with flames licking our Great Taste Award winning meat, enjoying conversation whilst the warm breeze carries mouthwatering aromas on the thermals above us.

What the judges had to say

"A juicy looking steak which has caramelised well. We found the meat moist and it has a great texture with the right amount of chew. We really like the depth of flavour of this steak and feel it has a long length of flavour. The fat is full of flavour and a great melt in the mouth texture."

"A juicy mouthful - soft and tender, great pork flavour and a superb finish. The deep notes of savoury pork are intense and yet also sweet. We loved the lingering finish of complex, savoury porkiness - delicious."

Rearing animals in harmony with nature, at a slow pace allowing them to reach a natural maturity is key to developing a deep flavour and texture that creates sensational cuts of meat that we know will fill your taste buds with joy. Read more about our previous winners here.

Life Kitchen with Ryan Riley

We are delighted that we are supporting Ryan Riley's latest Life Kitchen event on the 29th of August in collaboration with Melissa Hemsley. Ryan is a true inspiration, holding classes for those living with or experiencing cancer to help reinvigorate tastebuds and inspiration for cooking with strong flavours such as Rose Harissa.

Ryan founded the charity Life Kitchen to provide free cookery classes in beautiful venues across the UK for people living with cancer after his mother, Krista, passed away in 2012 from small-cell lung cancer.

About 80% of people undergoing chemotherapy find that the treatment robs them of their ability to taste. This not only makes food unpalatable for them, it takes away one of the pleasures of life. That was my mum’s experience, and it’s why I’ve set out on this journey to help other people living with cancer.

Ryan is teaming up with Melissa to cook a delicious dinner that showcases Melissa's signature recipes and Ryan's quest for flavour, a key part of Life Kitchens aims.

Tickets include a glass of bubbly, canapes and four courses of delicious food and all proceeds go to Life Kitchen.
