June on the farm

June on the farm

June, the official start of the summer with the solstice on the 21st. Nothing marks the arrival more than that of the swallows overhead. Joyfully flittering above excitedly, catching mini beasts mid-air for their dinner. Here on the farm we are passionate not only about the animals we rear, but also that of the local wildlife. The hedgerows are now deep and full of lush vegetation, the perfect place for many varieties of farmland birds to make their nests.

Our hedgerows are more than 400 years old and are vital in helping to create a sustainable landscape for us to work in harmony with. The wild flora within the meadows are glowing golden in a swathe of buttercups and abundant with clover. There is much more to the grass than there seems. It is rich in biodiversity and creates the perfect feed for our cattle to graze on which is why June marks the optimum time to start silaging.

It’s also the time for lazy picnics amongst the meadow flowers, food in hand with blue sky above. Just the gentle hum of grasshoppers and birds singing melancholy in the trees. Eating al fresco is the perfect way to spend time in the great outdoors with friends and loved ones. Whether it be a BBQ in the garden or a picnic in the park this June we have an abundance of delicious cuts which are perfect for every occasion.

June meat box

This month our June meat box is packed full of delicious cuts of meat that are perfect for midweek meals. With sausages, chicken stir fry and our delicious 'Every Day' steaks, which are superb for dinners in a flash. We're also including two of our delicious properly free range duck breasts, which are simply stunning pan-fried until the skin is crispy and the meat blushing pink. Served thinly sliced and placed on top of a pea shoot and radish salad makes a beautiful light and flavoursome summer lunch.

Bristol Food Connections Festival

We are really excited to be taking part in this year's Bristol Food Connections

Bristol Food Connections festival is a citywide celebration of food of epic proportions.

From 11th – 17th June 2018, residents and visitors alike will be taken on a journey of exploration and discovery of all that is GREAT about food in Bristol (and beyond) through a cornucopia of events that are sure to tantalise and tempt, educate and enlighten.

It’s a week when food takes over the city, and the team at Bristol Food Connections shine a light on all the great people, businesses and organisations that make Bristol’s food culture so uniquely independent and creative – celebrating every aspect of the journey of food – from field to fork.

We are teaming up with our friends at River Cottage Kitchen for an evening of mouth-watering food and thought-provoking conversation with Peter.

With the rise in veganism and global meat consumption on an unhealthy trajectory, Peter will be asking the question whether we should be eating less meat? From intensively reared to free-range and organic, he’ll be discussing the farming systems and their pros and cons.

Come and enjoy a delicious four-course menu created especially for the evening.

Please call River Cottage Kitchen Bristol on 0117 973 2458 to book.

Tickets are £35 and places are limited.

When: Wednesday 13th June
Time: 7:00 pm
Address: River Cottage Kitchen, St Johns Court, Whiteladies Rd, Bristol BS8 2QY
