Cornish Yarg

Cornish Yarg is a nettle wrapped semi hard cheese made from grass rich Cornish milk. Tangy under its natural rind and slightly crumbly in the core, it consistently wins top international awards.

Made by Catherine Mead and Dane Hopkins, Cornish Yarg is a modern British cheese – invented in the 1980s by Alan Gray and now made by Lynher Dairies.

A delicate, yoghurty cheese, wrapped in nettle leaves, Cornish Yarg has a wonderfully fluffy textured centre with delicious lactic flavours and a buttery, creamy breakdown under the slightly earthy edible rind.

Lynher Dairies is the home of Cornish Yarg and Wild Garlic Yarg. It is now one of the most successful makers of artisan cheese in Britain, consistently winning top prizes, including Best English Cheese at the International Cheese Awards.

Trevor and Julie Howe lovingly built up the herd of Ayrshires over decades, handing over the Cornwall Council tenancy to Jonathan and Eleanor Hosken in 2019. Like the Howes, the Hoskens farm by the highest of animal welfare principles.

The grass-rich milk produced by the Ayrshires is used in making the Cornish Yarg. Pleasingly, they won a Gold at the World Cheese Awards 2019 after entering their first batch of Cornish Yarg made entirely from their Ayrshire milk. Top judges clearly agree – superb milk makes superb cheese!

Incredibly, the farm hand picks two tonnes of nettle and wild garlic leaves to dress their cheese each year
