Farming olives in Crete wasn’t exactly the future that Harry and Will envisioned when they were growing up but it’s funny how some things turn out.
A family holiday that led to love is the starting point of this story. Harry met his future wife, Eleni, on a chance encounter in Zakros whilst on a relaxing break with his family - leading to him moving there permanently. Harry quickly found work on the island. Working the olive fields, Harry found a deep connection with the ground and a simpler way of living. At the same time, back in the UK, Will was studying hard but growing increasingly disheartened with the consumeristic aspects of design. A tale of the two brothers had diverged massively at this point but Will's frequent visits to the island meant that the brothers began to understand the island in more depth. They began to realise that even in the far corner of Crete, there were still pressures from a system that they did believe in. Pressures were being placed upon people who rely on working with the land to survive.
As with many farming systems, Harry and Will realised that the olive farmers in Zakros were subject to pressures that included demand for yield over all else and chemicals being pushed as a solution. There was tension between the craft and the system. They wanted to change this and slowly but surely they did.
Harry and Will became owners of 200 olive trees. Two fields of growth that they had worked hard and strived for. So, the two brothers who had moved to Crete became olive farmers. They were driven by the belief that they could reconnect this craft back to nature and redefine how it is valued. Unlikely apprentices, they were in need of some guidance which came from seasoned olive oil farmers Antoni and Jiannis who were fighting the system of high yield, low quality crops.
From focusing on giving back to the land and soil, the brothers pushed through the parameters of organic farming into a more regenerative approach. Their business is focuses upon doing things a different way - ensuring that the craft is valued and the process is cared about by the consumer. These two worlds, two fields and two brothers are dependent upon one another and it is up to our community to champion the hard work that they are doing.
What is best about Harry and Will’s mindset is that it is all underpinned by the fact that no rigid system will work. There is a need to experiment, to push the edge - and that goes beyond olive farming. It’s the way to move forward, respecting the earth, respecting nature and respecting each other.
