Every home cook knows that butter can make every single dish better.
Appleby's Whey Butter is made with raw milk, traditionally churned, salted and patted using the ‘scotch hands’ that give the unique lines on the pats.
The flavour is deliciously mellow and very moreish.
Curds are made into the cheese and the whey was traditionally used to make butter, feed the livestock or put back on the land. Appleby’s revived their whey butter after a 30 year interlude and have found it so popular that they wish they could make twice as much - and we echo this statement!

We will deliver our whey butter with at least two weeks shelf life.
Refrigerate immediately on arrival.
The butter can be frozen. If freezing, freeze on the day of delivery by removing from the wooden box and protecting with an airtight wrap.

It's all about the heritage, provenance and legacy for Paul and Sarah Appleby and their five children. Moving all together as one unit, the dairy, farm and family are part of the rhythm of family life.This rhythm provides the ethos behind the way that the Appleby's farm - it is largely influenced by Paul's grandparents who came from a long line of cheesemakers.
Since 1952, Appleby's has remained in family hands, with this heritage forming an intrinsic part of what they do, from the way that they farm to the way they think about maturation. Their farmhouse and where they make the cheese has stayed as one of the last 'farmhouse' cheese dairy's left. As Paul and Sarah move the farm into a more 21st century mindset, they are continously returning to historical notes as their future is influenced by the same traditional values.
Recently, the farm has undergone a conversion towards a more regenerative and sustainable way of farming. Each cloth bound Cheshire encapsulates a moment in time - the soil, grass pastures, cows, weather season. It's a system which we swear by here at Pipers Farm and is so rewarding to see friends picking up this way of farming. The provenance and flora of the natural surroundings and landscape give Appleby's cheeses and butters a flavour that is totally unique.
Looking to the future, Appleby's is a pioneer for small traditional farmhouse dairies that are making delicious, thought-provoking cheeses. This is great British produce - giving people pleasure as they eat, ensuring a marvellous legacy for farmers and cheesemakers over the centuries.
