A wonderful value natural wine from Gonzalo Grijalba, 100% Tempranillo, from Fuenmayor - this is a real expression of the local terroir. Using minimal intervention & organic practices, this is not a run-of the mill bottle of plonk. There is a cult following for this wine.

Dedicating the Gran Cerdo label (which translates to Big Pig in Spanish) to the bank executives who wouldn't give him a loan to start his wine business, Gonzalo Grijalba is passionate about reclaiming the biodiversity of the earth he farms, and has moved away from more commercial practices involving pesticides and herbicides for more biodynamic methods.

Serve with roast chicken or pork, light salads, or pork charcuterie.

Nose: Fruity with spicy flavours.  

Palate: An intoxicating combination of red and dark berries, faint lavender (or violets) and a slightly earthy edge. The herbacious flavours gives the wine a slight green finish with a little spice.

ABV: 13.5%    

For bottles with corks, be sure to store your wine horizontally in a wine rack. Keeping wine on its side helps keep the cork moist, which is key for long-term storage, as a dried out cork can cause seepage and premature aging. 

While it's not necessary to keep screw top wine bottles on their sides, horizontal storage is nevertheless an efficient way to store your wines for maximum space and easy access.

Wine maker Gonzalo Grijalba was born in Logroño, Spain and grew up among the vineyards that his parents cultivated in Fuenmayor. After several years of training in various parts of the wine-making world, he returned to start his own project. Fiercely protective of the terroir of his family vineyards Gonzalo rejects market driven fashions, chemical treatments and conformism. Instead he has sought out his own methods with respect for the land, his vineyards and the traditions of his forefathers. Gonzalo has worked hard to restore the vitality of the vineyards, and has revived natural treatments and biodynamic practices to maintain healthy vineyards.
