Metamorphika, Sumoll Blanc Brisat
From the Costador vineyards in Catalonia comes this unique orange wine that is bursting with savoury citrus fruit character and has a crisp acidic freshness.
Made from an ancient, almost extinct Catalan grape variety, Sumoll Blanc are grown on 80-year-old bush vines at 600m above sea level. The wine is left to bubble away in an amphora for 12 weeks before its juice is extracted and then left to ferment again in an amphora for 6 months. It is then bottled in beautiful clay bottles to protect it from light exposure.
Winemaker Joan Franquet farms the ancient vineyards biodynamically with minimal intervention. Joan's vineyard is more than just a winery, it’s a real adventure, he discovers the most difficult places for growing grapes whilst also trying to revive almost extinct varieties.
The perfect accompaniment to chicken and pork dishes. Best served between 10-12°С.
Nose: Bright notes of apricot and hints of citrus, with more subtle notes of flowers, nuts and dried fruit.
Palate: Sweet, but at the same time it has a noticeable sour taste. Flavours of Mediterranean fruits including orange, pear and melon followed by spicey herby notes.
For bottles with corks, be sure to store your wine horizontally in a wine rack. Keeping wine on its side helps keep the cork moist, which is key for long-term storage, as a dried out cork can cause seepage and premature aging.
While it's not necessary to keep screw top wine bottles on their sides, horizontal storage is nevertheless an efficient way to store your wines for maximum space and easy access.

Joan Franquet grew up in Priorat, surrounded by vines and olive trees (his family produced primarily Arbequina olives). As an adult, during a long career in food exportation, he always dreamed of returning to his rural roots, in particular that of winemaking. In 2009 Joan took the appropriate steps to pursue this dream, taking on old vines from his wife’s family in Conca de Barberà along with some of his own family’s vines in Priorat, he set up Costador Terroirs Mediterrani.
Costador grow a wide range of indigenous Catalan varieties, some of which are almost extinct; the old vines, between 60 and 110 years old from mountain vineyards are grown at 400-800m above sea level. He also has a couple of seaside plots. Joan constantly experiment with new wines and styles, focussing on traditions such as long maceration times in amphora (some of which are up to 100 years old). The majority of their wines go through at least some time in old French oak or acacia barrels, to round them off.
The wines of Costador demonstrate how it is indeed possible to make terroirs expressing wines, with no additives, which are clean, elegant and sophisticated in style. Wines that express their region and grape varieties loudly, whilst still appealing to both classic and open minded tastes.
