Slowly Grown
Most mutton in the UK is culled between the ages of 3 and 5 years, however in Matt's flock the Cull Yaw mutton are notably older usually 5 years and above. They spend their later years roaming the Cornish landscapes and grazing on the readily available pastures , leading to the development of their muscles and wonderful layer of fat which they are famous for.
Frequently Asked Questions for Cull Yaw Mutton
What is Cull Yaw?
Cull Yaw is mature mutton from ewes that have finished their natural breeding cycle, offering deep, complex flavour and exceptional marbling. At Pipers Farm, we work with Matt Chatfield who rears native-breed ewes slowly on a natural, pasture-based diet. This ethical approach reduces waste, respects the animal’s full life cycle, and produces rich, tender meat perfect for slow cooking and roasting. Cull Yaw is a true reflection of sustainable, traditional farming, delivering unparalleled depth of flavour in every bite.
