There's nothing like the sound of a can of beer popping open at the end of a long day. When it's a cold can of sustainably brewed beer, made with natural, organic ingredients, it's even more of a joy. That's why we are thrilled to have recently added Small Beer Brew Co. beers to our cellar here at Pipers Farm.
About Small Beer Brew Co.
Small Beer Co was founded back in 2017 by friends James Grundy and Felix James, who met each other whilst working together at Sipsmith, the London-based microdistillery iconic for their dry gin. James and Felix first brewed beer together in 2016 and were hatching their plan to reintroduce the concept of small beer to the 21st century consumer soon after.
The Small Beer Brew Co. was founded to revive the lost art of brewing small beer. They are the world's first brewery dedicated to exclusively brewing this type of beer small. They operate from a London-based brewery located close to the infamous Bermondsey Beer Mile, a stretch of the Bermondsey district that is home to craft beer bars, microbreweries and taprooms.
What is Small Beer?
As a concept, Small Beer originates from as far back as the 18th century, when drinking water was so scarce. Due to this, low alcohol volume beer was a staple to ensure hydration. "Small" refers to the low alcohol content, typically of between 0.5% and 2.8% ABV.
How is Small Beer produced?
The bespoke brewing kit implemented by Small Beer Brew Co. allows them to brew their beer to a particular strength, which means that it isn't necessary to remove or lower the alcohol content that occurs during fermentation.
Unlike other breweries, Small Beer Brew Co. don't dilute or dealcoholise their beers, as they strongly believe this would compromise the flavour and drinking experience.
Small Beer Brew Co pride themselves on using only the finest, natural ingredients; malted barley, hops, yeast and water, oats, rye and wheat, championing the best of British farming and working in harmony with nature to achieve a delicious, refreshing and guilt-free drinking experience.
How sustainable is Small Beer?
Sustainability is key for Small Beer Brew Co. They were the first London brewery to gain B Corp certification and strive to ensure their operations are as sustainable as possible. 100% of the electricity consumed in their brewery is generated from the wind, sun and sea. Small Beer Brew Co. have also implemented an innovative 'dry floor policy' which saves over 6.5 million litres of water.
